Since Kurt and Russell had some questions regarding the “German mentality”, I will share my perspective: As a person from the working class holding freedom high, I would say you feel isolated in EVERY country in the world. In Germany, however (and I have graphics and polls to support this) the pressure to go along with the state doctrine reg. central societal topics like i.e. education, economics, involvement in foreign wars etc. is THE HIGHEST IN THE WORLD. That means ofc, dissent comes with a very high risk. Now Germans, as Misha rightly noticed, are kinda an occupied people – but without even knowing it. Most of what the mainstream media feeds us, is straight outta NATO. I am SURE most Germans don’t even KNOW about what happened with Nordstream II. And if they do: Suppressing ANGER is what we as a nation are best at. This is what we have done at least since WW2. There was NO WAY for Germans to talk about THEIR losses, THEIR transgenerational trauma – it is only starting now, in my generation! As Germans, we are being socialised into being seen as the “bad guy”. (When I lived abroad I noticed with shock how everyone was joking about the Third Reich – totally impossible in Germany!) Which is why the typical German tries to get through life by just following orders, saving as much money as possible to buy the material stuff he thinks will enable him to lead a good life, and keeping his head down so as NEVER to clash with authorities. Which is why it should be underlined how MASSIVE these farmer protests are. They have class conciousness, they are allowing themselves to be angry and THIS is exactly how healing starts. I am so proud of them. – About the heating costs: Since half a year we can look into our montly consumption of gas (for heating), but we didn’t have this option before. We get a bill once a year (half a year later), telling us what we have to pay in addition to the montly fee, so the next bill will arrive around June. But not everyone gets it on the same day, and people tend to not talk about money too much, also because, as I laid out, Germans tend to think they simply have to “take the blame” and “suffer silently”, which is why it is not easy to organise protests around that. I personally don’t even know what would rip the majority out of their trance. Nothing, probably. – Oh and also: The Nazis’ symbol is still the swastika (but it is a forbidden symbol now). – Oh and unrelated, because I know he is getting some heat for interrupting or whatever: I LOVE KURT. SIMPLY LOVE THE GUY. So intelligent, funny, emotional. Pan sapiens. January 10, 2024 at 12:21 pmLog in to Reply I’m German too & I second all of the above. Nicely put! It is shocking and quite disturbing how ordinary people feel the need to DEFEND our government, while dismissing the needs of the people (who are just like them). So goddamn brainwashed. And — oh so predictable — just as these badly needed protests start, the media gets busy undermining them by claiming they’re being used and undercut by ‘far-right, extreme forces’. The playbook is so fucking lame, but sadly it works.. . fenrir January 10, 2024 at 11:29 pmLog in to Reply Another thing, that seems typically german is people, that pretend they can explain the mental state of more than 84 million citizens, conflating tiny observations with lots of assumptions, prejudice and opinion. Michelle D January 11, 2024 at 2:09 amLog in to Reply I adore Kurt. Do people want Kurt drugged so he alters his brilliant brain? This is near perfection: Kurt, Russ, Keaton and Max. Also to Fenir (above), why be snarky towards miss.ferret and pan sapiens who have come here to express thanks for covering an import topic in the hope of motivating others? I am horrified at the burdens ordinary German people are made to carry from the past, and the US likes it that way. fenrir January 11, 2024 at 5:29 amLog in to Reply They express an opinion disguised as observation. Keeping guilt at a high level is a classic trick to control people, christianity/catholicism is based around that. The claim, that “there was no way to talk about the losses” is complete and utter nonsense, mainstream media is spreading NATO talking points in all the western world and if you think trust in government is high in Germany, you have never lived in Sweden. miss.feret claims to be “working class”, that may or may not be true, but in the very least they are not manual labor class, because deepseated distrust and disgust are ripe among workers in Germany (who btw practically without exception have russian colleagues). But craftsmen will mostly focus on taking care of their own shit and not try to overthrow the government they despise. This leads to the impression of conformity, while that isn’t what those people think and feel. James McNeal January 10, 2024 at 11:56 amLog in to Reply We have a democracy to protect. By putting democracy in an airtight box where is can suffocate in peace. miss.ferret January 12, 2024 at 6:33 amLog in to Reply Fenrir, it should be obvious that what I say is based on my subjective view, which is why I didn’t spell it out like “in my view” etc. all the time. I do not claim to be able to explain the mentality of the whole German society, I am just drawing on my experiences, observations of people I talked to and, as a said, some data. Having saidd that, I do think it is possible to generalise on the mentality of a country, if you will, without overlooking the vast individual differences. If my comment seemed too bold, I think it might be due to the limited means of communication a comment box offers. As to “if you think trust in government is high in Germany, you have never lived in Sweden.” – no, I haven’t and I am referring to data, comparing countries in the world as to how likely it is for people to dissent. I think all you said adds to what I laid out. I don’t understand your frustration with me, but hope you do. Leave A Comment Cancel replyYou must be logged in to post a comment.
